Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:
- On Friday, Raleigh Police welcomed the newest officers to the department during the graduation of the 125th class for the department. There were 22 new officers sworn in, but they have had the opportunity to work for the past six months. As of Friday, Raleigh police said they still have a little over 100 vacancies. Chief Patterson says they are doing a lot of things to recruit and providing incentives to those who want to be a Raleigh police officer. During the ceremony they took a moment to honor Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd who was killed in August, and Raleigh Police Officer Gabriel Torres who was killed on October 13. (CBS17)
- A water main break closed down part of Wake Forest road on Friday night, during rush hour. Wake Forest Road closed down around 4:30 p.m. between St. Albans Drive and Dresser Court, north of Interstate 440. The city expected repairs to be completed by 6 a.m. on Saturday, but rain caused the repairs to be delayed into the afternoon. The water break caused significant damage that required crews to dig underground to repair the road. (CBS17, WRAL) A portion of Kildaire Farm Road in Cary will be closing beginning on Monday for installation of a water line. (CBS17)
- The suspect in Raleigh's October 13 mass shooting is recovering at WakeMed and is expected to begin physical rehabilitation as soon as Friday. Austin Thompson, 15, is being monitored by Raleigh police officers around the clock, and that will continue as he begins rehab. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman has already announced that when Thompson recovers enough to stand trial, there has already been a petition filed to try him as an adult. Police have still not identified a clear motive in the acts, or said where Thompson was able to get the guns allegedly used in the mass shooting. (WRAL)
- Raleigh nonprofit Triangle Family Services (TFS) is nearing the completion of a million-dollar renovation project at its facility and unveiled a new mural to celebrate. The mural, named "Beautiful Possibilities," is symbolic of what the TFS staff hopes families will experience. The old building leaked and had safety and security concerns, but chief executive officer of TFS, Alize Lutz hopes the modernization will be more inviting for families coming to them. The mural painted by artist David Eichenberger features images of flower buds and some in bloom alongside a caterpillar, chrysalis and a butterfly to represent hope and beauty. (CBS17)
- N.C. Highway Patrol officers were searching for a suspect on Friday afternoon after a driver led them on a chase following an attempted traffic stop on I-440. The suspect left his vehicle at Hayloft Circle, initiating the search in the area of Bashford Road. Raleigh Police and K-9s assisted the Highway Patrol with the search, and residents were asked to remain in their homes while the search was underway. (CBS17, FOX8)
- On Friday, a Raleigh prisoner was arrested in connection to the killing of Ronald Rhodes while in the Central Prison's custody. Quashon Williams, 22, was arraigned on first-degree murder charges in the September 9 assault. Rhodes was being housed as a "safekeeper" while awaiting trial. (CBS17, Original Story: CBS17, WRAL)
