Happy National Face Your Fears Day Raleigh!

How did your week start? Did you tackle it with optimism? Maybe you just got by. Either way, you have made it to today, and today is a great chance to face your fears and really springboard into a good week. Below I've got all the news you need to know, including:

  • No charges filed for the officers involved in the death of Reuel Rodriguez-Nunez.
  • BBB warns ahead of the State Fair.
  • The Sister Act opens with help of a Raleigh native and Broadway star.

But first, today's weather:

Nice with periods of sun. High: 73 Low: 54.

Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman has announced that the Raleigh police officers who shot and killed a man in May will not face prosecution. Reuel Rodriguez-Nunez was accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at police cars. In the newly released autopsy report, it was revealed that Rodriguez-Nunez suffered 11 gunshot wounds. Family members have called for changes to police policy, saying that officers failed to handle the situation as a mental health crisis. (abc11, FOX8, WITN, WRAL)
  2. Monday was the first day of sign up for families wanting to be included in the Salvation Army's Christmas Cheer Program, including the Angel Tree distribution. Families will be able to sign up each day through Friday, October 14 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the old Anchor Auto Outlet on Buck Jones Road in Raleigh. This year is the first return of in-person registration after two years of virtual sign-ups. Volunteers are needed to interview families and enter data into computers. (CBS17, WRAL)
  3. On Sunday afternoon, the Raleigh fire department hosted a family event to kick off Fire Prevention Week. Lt. Lemeul Hubbard, fire education coordinator for Raleigh emphasized that families must have an escape plan just in case. Hubbard encouraged families to hold regular fire drills, and said that 70% of families have never experienced a fire drill. He also said that on average, Raleigh experiences two fatal house fires a year, but this year there have already been three. (abc11) The event came as the USDA Forest Service and N.C. Forest Service are reminding residents to be cautious as careless backyard burning is the leading cause of wildfires in the state. (CBS17)
  4. North Carolina State University is working to terminate a sponsorship contract with Pink Energy, after the company abruptly went out of business. Pink Energy advertising has been visible at Wolfpack sports events, but the university said it has moved to end the contract. The sponsorship agreement began in 2019. (WRAL)
  5. A juvenile was shot near a Raleigh townhome complex on Monday. Officers with the Raleigh Police Department responded to the Park Glen Townhomes on Park Glen Drive around 1:30 am. The victim's identity has not been shared, but he is suffering non-life-threatening injuries. Currently no suspects are in custody. (WRAL)
  6. The Better Business Bureau of Eastern NC is reminding fairgoers to use caution when shopping. Many vendors are from out of town, and buyers should research the company, especially on large purchases that require contracts. The Federal Trade Commission has a cooling off rule that allows a three-day period to cancel, but not all purchases apply. Meredith Radford with the BBB says that consumers should not feel pressured to buy on the spot, and should be wary of fake entrance and ride tickets being sold outside of the fair ground gates or online. From my notebook:

  • This National Face Your Fears Day comes right after my sister celebrated our birthday by going sky-diving. Now as a sister, obviously that means I need to step up my thrill-seeking game because simply existing is a competition for us. Raleigh may not have a sky-diving spot, but there are a few places that can get your adrenaline pumping. (Tripadvisor, VisitRaleigh)
  • Robert Hartwell, a Broadway star and Raleigh native has returned home to direct and choreograph "Sister Act" for the North Carolina Theatre. (Spectrum News 1)
  • A Raleigh woman, Meka Knepley has launched a new app that combines Amazon's shopping capabilities with TikTok's video capabilities. (Spectrum News 1)
