Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- A Raleigh police officer is under investigation by the SBI and internal affairs after a man was shot and killed during an incident on I-440. The man was suspected of impairment after a car crash that caused an overturned vehicle. While police tried to interact with the man, he took out a knife and refused to cooperate with officials. (abc11, WITN)
- An ambulance sustained heavy damage after a driver failed to yield to the lights and siren at an intersection. The ambulance was not carrying a patient at the time, but was on the way to an emergency call when the wreck happened. A photo from the scene shows heavy damage to the front of the ambulance. Both drivers sustained minor injuries. (CBS17)
- An overnight fire badly damaged the Peach Road Community Center in Raleigh. Firefighters arrived to the building before 2:30 am on Wednesday. No one was in the building at the time of the fire and officials believe that it was likely an electrical fire. The majority of the damage was in the roof of the community center. (WRAL)
- On Tuesday, a three-judge panel made the decision that the redistricting maps drawn by the Republican-controlled General Assembly will be allowed to stand. This decision comes from the Superior Court of Wake County and is likely to face an appeal. With the current decision in place, candidate filing will resume at 8:00 am on Thursday, February 24. (abc13)
- The North Carolina Chinese Lantern Festival set record numbers for visitation this season. The festival back in 2019 saw 121,645 visitors, and after being canceled in 2020 drew more than 200,000 visitors this year.
