- The National Association of School Resource Officers works to "provide safe learning environments." The NASRO is made up of trained law enforcement officers, and they train around 4,000 to 5,000 officers annually. Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker says that due to staffing issues they are not always able to put seasoned officers in the schools. Currently in Wake County Public School System there are 75 SROs districtwide. (abc11) In wake of the Uvalde shooting, leaders in Raleigh and Durham held vigils for the victims. (abc11)
- A Friday morning police chase led to traffic delays on Interstate 40. The chase began in Johnston County and ended near the Rock Quarry overpass when the suspect attempted to ditch their vehicle and flee. Police have the unidentified suspect in custody and the scene was cleared around 6 a.m., but other crashes were caused in the traffic causing further delays. (abc11)
- The City of Raleigh has been forced to delay pool openings from the typical Memorial Day Weekend opening, due to a lifeguard shortage. The city is looking at the weekend of June 10-12 as a potential opening timeframe. According to Parks Department Assistant Director Ken Hisler, lifeguard staffing is about 40% of where it would be in a typical year. The lifeguard pay is $13 an hour, up from $9 an hour as of spring 2022. (CBS17)
- A Wake County District Court judge has ruled this week against a homeowners' association that threatened to fine a homeowner for his pet snack station. Chuck Pringle says that he sees the judge's decision as a victory after fighting the HOA for two years. The argument was regarding who had control over the city of Raleigh's right-of-way, and in Pringle's lawsuit it claimed that the HOA rules stated that the property owned by the city is exempt from HOA control. - More than two weeks after the road rage gunfire exchange that injured a dump truck driver, a second individual has been charged.
