(Patch Media)

Happy National Dessert Day Raleigh!

I want to take a second and express my sincerest condolences for those impacted by last night's events. I generally publish my articles around 5:00 pm, but I have come back to adjust some of the articles to ensure that everyone is aware of what unfolded in our community. Tomorrow I will most certainly have more follow up information regarding the events, but below, I have compiled all of the most important news, including:

  • Suspect arrested in connection with a string of Wells Fargo robberies.
  • Fortnight's Fear Forest
  • A guide to parking at the State Fair

But first, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 73 Low: 46.

Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A northeastern Raleigh community was virtually locked down last night, when it became the scene of a mass shooting. Residents of the Hedingham neighborhood were asked to remain in their homes due to an active shooter in the area. At least five people were shot and killed, including an off duty Raleigh police officer, and at least two others were shot. Authorities released that a suspect was "contained" but did not provide further information. State and local authorities responded to the scene. (NY Times, RaleighNC.Gov)
  2. On Wednesday, Wake County Sheriff's Deputies engaged in more special training to respond to active shooters. Deputies in the department learned new ways to respond in an active shooter situation. Earlier this year, deputies trained in a school, but this training took place inside of the Wake County Justice Center. At the time this article was written, Gun Violence Archive noted that there had been 530 mass shootings so far this year, and tragically, I have re-written this section as Raleigh experienced the latest mass shooting in the nation. (abc11)
  3. The Raleigh Police Department has identified and charged one suspect in the multiple robberies at Wells Fargo locations in Raleigh. Police believe that Spencer Boucha is responsibl for three robberies or attempted robberies in a 10 day span. The first took place on October 3 at the location on Hillsborough Street, the second on Tuesday at New Bern, and the third took place on Wednesday at the Glenwood Avenue location. Boucha has arrest warrants for two counts of common law robbery and two counts of attempted common law robbery. Police have not identified any connection to the September 19 attempted robbery at the Wells Fargo on Clark Avenue. (CBS17, CBS17, WRAL)
  4. On Thursday, at 12:07 a.m., a woman was killed in a hit-and-run in Raleigh. Police have a suspect, James Douglas Virgin in custody. Raleigh police responded to the crash at South Saunders Street at Wilmington Street after the driver called 911. A preliminary investigation indicated that a woman was hit as she walked beside South Saunders Street. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL) Another fatal hit-and-run happened just one day prior on Wednesday morning, and one man was killed. Faramarz Zeinahvazi was walking northbound on the east side of Six Forks Road, and attempted to cross the driveway of Carroll Middle School when he was struck. The driver left the scene and police are searching for any information, including a description of the vehicle. According to investigators, Zeinahvazi may have also suffered from a heart attack, and the sequence of events is unclear. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  5. The Cary Police Department is participating in the "Return to Home Challenge," and has teamed up with local veterinarians to provide free pet microchips. The Cary Police Department's goal is to increase the chances that lost pets will be reunited with their owners, and not end up at local shelters. The program will run indefinitely and is not exclusive to Cary pets. To get pets microchipped free of charge, pet owners must go to any of the 12 participating veterinary providers. (CBS17)
  6. Raleigh residents in need of Raleigh's Affordable Housing Units can spend years waiting for one to become available. City leaders say they are working to help more residents have access to affordable housing units. Raleigh is working with developers, and have five collaborative projects under construction right now, with the largest at Walnut Trace in southeast Raleigh. The city's. Affordable Housing Report shows that rent prices have gone up 21% in a 7-year period, with nearly 29,000 low-income renters and 15,000 homeowners experiencing being "housing cost-burdened." More than 2,400 affordable rental units are in the works for the next fiscal year, among other new initiatives the City will be taking. (abc11)

From my notebook:

  • It's National Dessert Day, and for me, nothing screams dessert quite like a patisserie. Now I have been addicted to Lucette Grace since I discovered them while pregnant with my first child, but now, Paige Patisserie has piqued my interest and I might just have to celebrate accordingly.
  • RaleighNC.gov relaunched on November 20, 2019 and is now ready for "primetime" now.
  • If you're headed to the fair and don't want to be a sucker like me and pay to park, check out this State Fair Parking Guide courtesy of WRAL.
