Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. An employee with the Raleigh Police Department was charged with a DWI on Sunday. Darran Edwards works as a communication analyst in the department's public affairs office. Around 2 a.m. Edwards was arrested on Glenwood Avenue and was charged. A spokesperson for the department addressed the arrest, saying that, "All employees of the Raleigh Police Department, both sworn and non-sworn, are expected to conduct themselves with the highest professional and ethical standards on and off duty." (WRAL)
  2. The Wake County Sheriff's Office helped reunite a 14-year-old boy with his family on Sunday. A driver spotted the teen near Poole and Hodge roads on Sunday morning. The boy appeared to be non-verbal with some cognitive disability. Sheriffs responded to a driver's 911 call, and the boy was taken to WakeMed Children's Hospital to be checked as a precaution. A community alert was issued with ReadyWake and an hour after, the boy was reunited with his family. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. (WRAL)
  3. A team of high schoolers from Raleigh's Enloe High School are set to advance in the U.S. Department of Energy's national science competition. The students will attend the finals in the National Science Bowl, and they will compete in a variety of question-and-answer format solving technical problems. The students will attend the competition in Washington, D.C. with an all-expenses-paid trip. (CBS17)
  4. A recent study ranked Raleigh No. 3 among the largest 50 metropolitan areas in "The best and worst places for first-time homebuyers in 2023." The website took into account four categories, with Raleigh placing No. 1 in one. Many who are seeking to purchase a first-time home in Raleigh argue that the rankings are not an accurate representation of the market. The author of the report says that Raleigh is more of a buyers market than the other metros listed, but other metrics put Raleigh no higher than 17th. (CBS17)
  5. The intersection at Hillsborough Street and Blue Ridge Road has been closed for construction for some time, and it is now expected to last several more months. The closure extension comes as crews begin construction that will run Blue Ridge Road underneath Hillsborough street, the railroad tracks and Beryl Road. A connector road will be opened to maintain some access. The project is expected to be completed in 2024. (abc11)
