Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- GalaxyCon had some impressive guests in attendance, most notably William Shatner was present to interact with convention goers. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper took the opportunity to meet his childhood hero and posted about the opportunity to discuss "the arts, music, health, the environment and much more." (abc11) Raleigh City Councilman David Cox also got the opportunity to connect with Shatner. Shatner took the opportunity to heckle Cox during his question-and-answer period, telling him, "Get lost will you, Eddie." Cox said it was the best fun he's had in a while. (NewsDeal) Downtown businesses said that they noticed large crowds from the event. (CBS17)
- An individual who shoplifted from Crabtree Valley Mall had to be rescued from Crabtree Creek after an attempted escape. The incident was reported around 7:20 p.m. when two suspects robbed the Champs store and at least two kiosks. The two suspects ran from mall security once confronted and one went into the creek as part of his getaway. The suspect encountered strong currents and officials had to initiate a water rescue. The man was treated by EMS crews and is now facing either felony larceny or strong-arm robbery charges. The other suspect was taken into custody without incident. (CBS17, WRAL)
- Raleigh food trucks are battling the cost of inflation as the increase in costs have affected many small businesses. James Shufford, owner of Jolly's Catering and Events says that prices of everything from paper products to fuel for his vehicle have been steadily rising. Shufford says that he is trying to shoulder as much of the costs as possible to keep meals affordable, but some menu items have gone up in price. Food trucks face additional inflation costs as propane and oil cause significant price increases for them. (Spectrum News 1)
- Raleigh rolled out new security measures in the city's municipal building on Hargett Street Monday. The new measures require all visitors and employees to walk through metal detectors, a "wanding" of bags and if necessary, submit to a bag check. Until now, the building only had a sign-in process. A city representative said that metal detectors will also soon be placed in One Exchange Plaza and Martin Street. (abc11)
- On Sunday afternoon, two different crashes involving six vehicles caused massive traffic delays on Interstate 440 in Raleigh. The incidents were reported just after 3 p.m. on the eastbound lanes of I-440 near Western Boulevard at exit 2. No one was seriously injured in either accident, but NCDOT indicated there were two miles of back-ups until the scene was cleared just after 4:30 p.m. (CBS17)
