Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- Friday marked the first weekend of Raleigh's Sip n' Stroll district in downtown. Bartenders have had good experience with the district so far, with more people coming downtown to enjoy the 70 participating bars and restaurants. The existing district is part of the pilot program for social districts in Raleigh, and if it goes well, city leaders could consider creating more social districts in Raleigh. This is the first weekend with bartenders having the added stress of ensuring patrons don't abuse the system or get overserved. (abc11, WRAL)
- The chief medical officer at WakeMed is sounding the alarm regarding the need for behavioral health-specific hospital beds in the state. Dr. Micah Krempasky shared WakeMed predicted they would complete around 13,700 mental health consultations in its emergency departments this year, 4,300 more than in 2019. The demand has grown significantly through the pandemic, but resources to support the need have not. On Monday, WakeMed submitted a proposal for a new mental health hospital, that would add 150 psych beds to Wake County by 2027 if approved. (abc11)
- A new facility has opened in South Raleigh to help bring blessings to nearby Raleigh families in need. Pastor Chris Jones and his team opened a 11,000 square foot building inside an empty warehouse on South Saunders Street just a week ago. The location has weights and workout equipment, a discount grocery store, a discount clothing boutique for women, and more. The center says they feed 3,000 Wake County families a month. The group also has future plans for a community kitchen, and on-site workforce training in the works. (abc11)
- Nationally, economists warn that we are witnessing a housing recession in terms of declining home sales and home building. Raleigh realtor, Danni Dichio, says that demand in Raleigh is still hot. She believes that buyers won't see a significant shift, although sellers are having to adjust their pricing. The federal reserve is expected to increase the interest rates again, and economists believe that is the leading factor in the housing recession. (abc11)
- Dozens of cars showed up ahead of Raleigh's gun buyback event. The turnout was greater than expected at opening. The gun buyback event is an initiative that Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin hopes will not only get dangerous guns off the streets, but will also educate residents on gun safety. This year alone, 200 guns were reported stolen from vehicles, and they hope to get the message across to secure your weapons, and the city is serious about gun violence in the community.
