Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- The NC State Fair is back and highlighting homemade and homegrown products in North Carolina. The Got to be NC exhibit, moved into the Pavilion at Dorton Arena, features small, locally-owned businesses with products like wines, fudge, and jerky. Got to be NC is a project founded by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services that promotes state agricultural projects and goods. (WNCT9)
- On Friday morning, volunteers and elected officials joined together to partake in a Habitat for Humanity project. The teams worked on three of the seven homes planned for Cary. Habitat Wake Director of Advocacy Jacquie Ayala says that elected officials can support affordable housing through policy agendas, and supporting long-term homeowners with property tax relief. - The City of Raleigh is trying to take a more personal approach to how it gathers feedback from communities on future development plans. Senior planner, Matthew Klem says the city is working with neighbors to create a vision for what types of developments they want to see in their community. The Dix Edge Area Study's goal is to engage with residents in historically lower income communities. (abc11)
- With the State Fair in town, the Wake County Sheriff's Office is leaning on other departments to meet the needs of the city. Typically the Sheriff's Office relies on five other agencies, but this year it needs the help of 19 others due to staffing shortages. (CBS17)
- A Raleigh woman is hoping to help tackle the opioid epidemic. Courtni Wright is a peer support specialist for the Wake County nonprofit Healing Transitions. Wright and her team spend their time knocking on doors and calling hundreds of people each week. She also created a Gofundme that has raised over $600 to create bags filled with resources like Narcan to aid in the event of an opioid overdose. (Spectrum News 1)
