Here are the top three stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Raleigh has been discussing the potential to create social districts to allow take-out alcohol sales in designated areas. The Downtown Raleigh Alliance presented ideas to the city's economic development committee this week, with a pilot social district starting on Fayetville Street, and options reaching out to Moore Square and possibly the Warehouse District. In the DRA surveys, 74% of those surveyed indicated "support or general support" for social district creation. (CBS17)
  2. The Carolina Peace Center held a vigil in downtown Raleigh for victims of gun violence. The group and founder, Faisal Khan, called upon lawmakers to ban assault weapons, implement thorough background checks, and introduction of common sense gun laws. Speakers at the vigil included people who lost family members to gun violence. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. At least seven threats were made last week against Wake County schools according to Sheriff Gerald Baker, and many of them are being investigated. Baker says some could face criminal charges for the threats made against middle and high schools in the district. Most of Wake County public schools are without school resource officers and Sheriff Baker says that they are "tracking them down so we can find out who they are, and make sure that we stand in their way."
