Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- New numbers have been released, showing that the Carolina Hurricanes NHL Stadium Series brought $13.6 million into the local economy. The figures exceed the previously projected $12.4 million that Visit Raleigh anticipated. The figure also only accounts for Sunday's game against the Capitals. According to Visit Raleigh, the four day event generated $20.1 million in local impact. (CBS17)
- Wake County Public Schools presented a new program to the Board of Education's student achievement committee on Tuesday. The program would provide access to after-school tutoring to students in some Wake County middle schools. School systems have been using stimulus money to help with challenges created from remote learning. State officials estimate that learning recovery will still require a few more years. Wake County has not finalized student eligibility for the program that they hope to roll out to a small number of schools to begin with. (WRAL)
- A representative from the Raleigh Police Department told the city council on Tuesday that their plan to crack down in the Glenwood South area is working. Three other city departments helped Raleigh in fall 2021 to address complaints of excessive noise and violence in the area. Since then, calls for service to the area are down, but reported incidents went up 16%. According to the representative, officers patrolling the area are finding drugs and guns before they get into the entertainment district. (WRAL)
- Wake County residents showed up on Tuesday night to voice their opinions regarding Duke Energy's proposed rate hike. Duke Energy asked state regulators to approve a rate hike of more than 16%. People in attendance talked of financial hardships that would make it difficult to pay for an increase in their electric bill. More hearings are to come, with one that will be held virtually to give the public the opportunity to voice their concerns. (abc11)
- A low-cost airline, Avelo, has announced that it will begin to offer direct flights between Rochester and RDU. The company began operating with a fleet of Boeing 737 planes in 2021. The service between ROC and RDU is scheduled to begin on June 14. (WXXI)
- On Tuesday, N.C. State confirmed the death of another student this academic year. The student died on Monday after being hospitalized for an accidental overdose. The student, who lived off campus, was the 10th student death this year. (CBS17)
