Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The NHL Stadium Series is expected to be one of the largest events that Raleigh has hosted as far as economic impact and exposure for the city. VisitRaleigh estimates $12.4 million in economic impact. More than 55,000 fans are expected, with around half of ticketholders coming from out of town. (CBS17) Tickets for the NHL Stadium Series is sold out, but if you're looking to get some tickets for the event, be cautious for scams. The Better Business Bureau says to be cautious when purchasing from third-party sites or scalpers. Ticketmaster offers "verified resale tickets." (abc11) If you don't manage to get tickers, there will be a free Stadium Series Watch Party in downtown Raleigh, hosted by the Downtown Raleigh Alliance. (CBS17)
  2. The family of Darryl Williams has retained a noted civil rights attorney, Ben Crump. Footage released last week shows Williams informing officers of his heart problems after being tased, and then being tased again following his disclosure. Six officers have been placed on administrative leave. Crump spoke on the incident, stating, "to continue to deploy a Taser on someone who discloses a heart condition and begs for mercy reflects an immense amount of apathy and blatant disregard for life." (abc11)
  3. Following the death of a Raleigh 11 year old at the Christmas Parade, several GoFundMe's were set up to benefit the victim, as well as Landen Glass who was driving the truck that lost control. One of the pages was organized by a man in Ohio to benefit both parties, but according to those involved, they have not gotten any of the funds from the campaign. Through the crowdfunding, the page set up by Austin Ferrell received more than $7,000 in donations. It began circulating on social media that Ferrell had used some of the money to pay off bills, and stated he would pay it back when he received a tax return. Ferrell denies any use of the funds, stating that all of the money is still held by the GoFundMe platform, and says that he is looking to refund all those who donated. (CBS17)
  4. Volunteers with the Wake County nonprofit, Mom Wishing Widows Well, spent the day before Valentine's Day, preparing arrangements for local widows. The idea for the outreach started in Marie Martin's home in 2022. The response was so big the nonprofit was formed. Dozens of volunteers and local business donations came together to provide a 180 bouquets to be hand-delivered to widows in the Triangle and those facing housing and income insecurity on Valentine's Day. (abc11)
  5. On Tuesday, Wake County announced that the county's website and staff email addresses will be changed from wakegov.com to wake.gov. Anyone who searches wakegov.com will now be redirected to wake.gov which is a more secure website domain. Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Shinica Thomas says that the domain will increase security and help protect residents from fraud, as anyone can purchase a .com domain whereas only qualified government entities can use .gov domains. The transition is being funded with maintenance funds that were budgeted by the county's Information Services Department. (WRAL)
  6. On Monday, Governor Roy Cooper announced funding to improve mental health programs at NC colleges and universities. The announcement comes days after the eighth student death of the year at NCSU. The investment comes from the Governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund, and will go towards providing and sustaining mental health services to students. (CBS17)
