Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Extreme temperatures are a huge concern for Wake County residents, as the heat index values are expected to remain in triple digits. Wake County has opened multiple cooling stations to help residents escape extreme heat through Friday. (INDY Week) Emergency departments have already seen 787 heat related illness visits, and according to one fire chief overloading outlets are a common cause of summer fires to be wary of. (CBS17) Heat related illness can often be hidden and pediatrician Christian Nechyba warns of some warning signs and best practices to deal with the heat. (abc11) Pet owners should also be wary of signs to look out for in their pets. (CBS17)
- Wake County gave out $20 million in federal relief funds to nonprofits through the county's "Elevate Wake" program. The funds were distributed to 71 nonprofit groups who received the funds earlier this year. 212 applications were received, totaling more than $148 million in requests. The grants distributed ranged from $10,000 to $2 million, and recipients must fulfil the goals outlined in their applications. (CBS17)
- The Wake County Sheriff's Office is looking for info regarding a rash of car break-ins and break-ins to attached garages. Deputies say that over the past month, there have been several cases in northern Wake County. In each incident, someone walked into a homeowner's driveway and entered unlocked cars to steal valuables. The break-ins occurred between midnight and 4:30 a.m., and the sheriff's office is encouraging people to lock their car doors, close windows, report suspicious behavior. (abc11, WRAL)
- Closures are planned for parts of U.S. 1 north of Raleigh by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The closures will take place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights throughout the next couple of weeks. NCDOT should slow down when approaching Thornton Road, and anticipate the possibility of delays. (CBS17)
- Two notable traffic collisions occurred in Raleigh in the last news cycle. A Wednesday afternoon traffic collision shut down part of Skycrest Drive near New Hope Road. At least one passenger vehicle was involved in the crash that overturned a garbage truck. One person had to be transported to the hospital. (CBS17) A Tuesday night crash on Chapel Hill Road injured one pedestrian. The Raleigh Police Department confirmed one man was hit and transported to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver, Dechavis McManus was charged with felony serious injury by vehicle, driving while impaired, and possession of marijuana. (WRAL)
