Happy National Candy Day Raleigh!

Every day when I write this recap, I try to think of what to say in this intro without sounding so repetitive, but ultimately my thoughts are always the same. I am so grateful for the weather, optimistic about the holidays, and hopeful for the future. So many times I've heard it said you can't go forward until you have looked back, and I love really absorbing everything that is happening locally to help me prepare for the months and years to come. I apologize if I start to sound like a broken record, but I just really appreciate those of you who take the time to really know our city, so that we can all go onward and grow together. Today's news is all below, featuring:

  • Cops called to Clyde's BBQ.
  • Goat Yoga nearby.
  • How to get rid of excess Halloween candy.
  • Raleigh Parks coat collection.

But first, today's weather:

Warm with periods of sun. High: 76 Low: 61.

Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. A juvenile has been arrested in connection to the Halloween night shooting that killed one and injured two others. Raleigh police identified the 15-year old male as a suspect in the case and brought him into custody, but did not release his identity due to age. According to 911 calls that have been released from the shooting, a teenage boy who called said that he saw one person running away after the shooting. (abc11, CBS17, CBS17, WRAL) The family of Xzavion Lawton is speaking out after he was killed, remembering him and begging residents to "put the guns away." (abc11)
  2. Former Vice President Mike Pence was present in Raleigh to help campaign with U.S. Senate candidate Ted Budd. Pence referred to Budd as "one of the strongest conservative voices" in the House. Prior to his appearance, Pence was present at a luncheon fundraiser for Budd. The question-and-answer with Pence and Budd focused on criticizing the Biden administration for policies that they say have contributed to high inflation and gas prices. Cheri Beasley, who is running against Budd for the U.S. Senate seat held a conference earlier in the day stating that "this election will decide whether we can protect our rights to make our own decisions for our bodies ... and whether or not our constitutional freedoms will be protected." (Federal News Network, WNCT9)
  3. Ahead of Halloween, an enforcement effort led by the NC Secretary of State and the NC Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force seized $224,000 worth of THC-infused gummies that mimic legitimate snack brands. NC Secretary of State Elaine F. Marshall said that they launched the effort after seeing a growing trend of THC-infused gummies and snacks counterfeiting popular snack brands that are marketed to children. Police offices across the state, including Wake County, participated in the efforts that found and seized the snacks from vape shops, convenience stores, gas stations, and more. The seizures were a result of 23 search warrants, and 30 consent searches, and establishments were not charged as the sweep was an educational effort, but if they attempt to sell similar products again they could face charges. (CBS17, WITN, WRAL) The "Booze It & Lose It" campaign that also ran ahead of Halloween reported 62 felony arrests, and 820 traffic violations. (CBS17)
  4. On Thursday, Wake County school leaders and representatives were at Millbrook Magnet High School to view the newly built music room. The new music room was made possible through a $200,000 grant from VH1 during the pandemic. The director of the music program, Chris Hathcock says that now every student has the opportunity to enjoy new keyboards, laptops, guitars and more. Visitors got to witness some students showcasing their talents with all that hey have learned in the last year. (CBS17)
  5. Police were called to Clyde Cooper's BBQ on Tuesday after a customer received "undercooked" food. She informed the staff that her meal, a serving of smoked pork, was pink, and they explained to her that when smoking pork barbeque, it turns pink. According to the business, they did offer her a plate to replace the food she did not want to eat. She left the restaurant, and called the police on the establishment, telling them that they tried to serve her food that was pink, and too fatty.
