Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Robert Steele is calling for the resignation of city councilmembers following the Hedingham mass shooting that killed his fiancé. Steele spoke at Tuesday night's council meeting about the lack of an emergency alert system, that he believes could have saved Mary Marshall's life on October 13. Steele went through the events of the night and emphasized that Marshall was killed nine minutes after the first 911 call was made. Some of those in attendance clapped as Steele placed partial blame on city council members and presented resignation papers for them to sign. (WBTW, WRAL) Steele has been a vocal critic of the City's response, stating that he felt like he was used during the city-sponsored vigil that he believes was too politically charged. (WRAL)
- Raleigh Chief of Police Estella Patterson gave an update on the mass shooting investigation during the city council meeting. She said that detectives have interviewed school officials, friends and family of the suspect, but they still do not know the exact motive. They are working with the District Attorney's office on charges and the SBI is continuing to investigate officers involved. (CBS17, WRAL) On the GoFundMe page created for Lynn Gardner, loved ones have given updates on her condition. According to an update by Mary Kathryn Kurth, she has improved enough to be moved to a step-down unit, making her way to in-patient rehabilitation. She has also improved enough to be able to speak again, and was able to go outside and be reunited with her beloved dog for the first time since the shooting. (WRAL)
- A lawsuit has been filed against WakeMed following the data breach involving Facebook's parent company Meta. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a former patient, alleging that WakeMed transmitted nearly 500,000 of its patients' personal health information to Facebook without patients' consent. The lawsuit alleges that the Meta Pixel tool used by the company collects identifying information, including names, email addresses, IP addresses, phone numbers and medical information to send to Facebook. The Meta Pixel tool was present on WakeMed's website, as well as its patient portal. The lawsuit claims that WakeMed violated FTC rules and the federal patient privacy law, HIPAA. (Health IT Security, WRAL)
- J. Cole's Dreamville announced a return to Raleigh for 2023 via the festival's Instagram. The festival is scheduled to be held April 1-2 at Dorothea Dix Park, with a lineup yet to be released. Dreamville first began in 2018, and has become one of the biggest festivals in the state, bringing more than $6 million in economic impact to the area last year. To sign up for festival information and a presale tickets password you can visit Dreamville's website. (abc11, CBS17) Monster Jam has also announced a return to PNC Arena on March 18-19, with pre-sale tickets beginning on Tuesday. (WRAL)
- Part of I-440 near Western Boulevard will be closing nightly for the next few weeks. The closure will take place so that demolition can occur as part of the I-440 Improvements Project. Closures will take place from midnight to 5 a.m. on most weeknights as weather allows and some weekend nights. This week work will begin on eastbound lanes. This will allow crews to safely remove the "old westbound I-440 bridge over Western Boulevard." (CBS17)
