Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. North Carolina tax filing has been pushed back to February 28. The tax season has been pushed back due to the budget delays that included tax changes that impact this year's filings. The department says that if taxpayers file electronically, they can expect to begin receiving refunds in April. (WSOC-TV)
  2. Several videos are circulating on social media that show Raleigh police officers using controversial tactics while responding to a dispute at Wingstop on Friday night. Officers responded to a dispute, after the customers involved had left, and began to question a customer that was not present for the initial altercation. As employees attempted to clarify what had happened, tensions rose and the incident escalated, leading to four people being charged and an internal investigation among RPD. (WRAL, WRAL Video)
  3. The North Carolina House of Representatives has reached an agreement on the new district maps. The House map passed 115-5, but the North Carolina Senate is finding the task much more difficult. Republicans and Democrats in the Senate appear to be less aligned on the collaborative efforts while drafting maps. Today a lower Wake County court will choose the map to be used in upcoming elections. (CBS17)
  4. Raleigh is rezoning city-owned land off of Fayetteville Street to build a new affordable housing complex. Local officials identified the need for affordable housing near downtown in the Dix Edge Area Study that began in July of 2020. According to a report from ApartmentList, rent prices in Raleigh have risen by 20.91% in the last year, and this move would reserve living space for people who make 80% or below the area's median income. (WRAL)
  5. The North Carolina State Graduate Workers Organizing Committee gathered to working conditions and policies related to COVID-19. The demonstration happened outside of Holiday Hall on February 16 as part of the Southern Workers Assembly statewide Day of Action. Workers are calling for paid sick leave, employer provided N95 masks, enforced social distancing, better workplace sanitation, and more. (The Technician)
