Here are the top six stories in Raleigh today:
- One teenage boy was killed, and two others were hospitalized after a Monday night shooting. Xzavion Lawton, 16, died near the River Birch at Town Center apartment complex. Lawton's mother said that he was out trick-or-treating with friends that night and around 9:54 p.m. officers informed her that her son was taken to WakeMed where he later died of his injuries. The two friends Xzavion was trick-or-treating with are expected to survive and no identifying information has been released regarding the two. (abc11, WRAL)
- Band Together and United Way of the Greater Triangle said on Tuesday, that October 28th's Mighty Giveback Show raised more than $1 million for nonprofits. The net proceeds will be distributed to 11 nonprofits, including Habitat for Humanity, Hope Renovations and Passage Home. The Mighty Giveback Show was sold out, with community members, leaders, partners and sponsors in the audience. (CBS17)
- The Carolina Hurricanes are preparing for a big night in February as they participate in the 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series game. The game will be the Carolina Hurricanes first appearance in the outdoor games and is expected to bring thousands to Raleigh. It's not clear how much it will cost to transform Carter-Finley from a football field into a hockey rink, but the Hurricanes are asking the City of Raleigh for a total of $200,000 to help with "event pre-planning and hospitality-related expenses." The Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau and Wake County have also been asked for a $200,000 contribution. (CBS17)
- On Tuesday morning, a crash involving four vehicles caused major delays on Interstate 440. The crash took place around 7 a.m. near Exit 5 westbound. Tow trucks were blocking three lanes around 8 a.m. and delays went on as far as Wade Avenue. None of the drivers who remained at the scene were badly injured. (WRAL)
- Monday was the beginning of N.C. State's Red and White week, and Chancellor Randy Woodson delivered his annual address. His speech was predominantly focused on the university's accomplishments, but he also took a moment to speak on the tragic loss of three students this year. Chancellor Woodson has spent his entire career in higher education, has children of his own, and said that the losses have weighed heavily on him. (CBS17, YouTube, NCSU News)
- The Wake County Animal Center is over capacity and in desperate need of animal lovers. The center has nearly 200 animals staying there, exceeding its floor capacity. The center is in critical need for adoptions, with only 75 kennels for dogs, and 42 spaces for cats. As of Monday there were 110 dogs and 75 cats being housed at the shelter. In addition to the existing pets being sheltered, surrender appointments are booked fully for the next month. Beginning yesterday, cats and dogs 8 years+ will be available at a reduced rate. Senior dogs will be $25, and cats will be name your price. (WRAL)
