I hope you had a safe and lovely Thanksgiving and Black Friday. It was a welcomed day of rest for me, and now I'm back to give you all the information you missed and will want to know about Raleigh, including:

  • GoFundMe pages are set up for those involved in the parade accident.
  • Local markets set up to support small businesses.
  • A Raleigh native is starring in a Disney+ movie.

Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. The Raleigh Rescue Mission delivered 1,200 Thanksgiving meals to senior citizens. Hundreds of volunteers helped make the delivery a reality. The seniors that were helped typically receive meals from Meals on Wheels, but the organization doesn't serve on Thanksgiving so Raleigh Rescue Mission stepped in to fill the void. The Rescue Mission also hosted a separate Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday afternoon for its residents. (CBS17)
  2. GoFundMe campaigns have been set up following the fatal accident at the Raleigh Christmas Parade. A family friend set up a GoFundMe page for the family of 11-year-old Hailey Brooks. The friend hopes that the page will generate enough in donations for the family to establish a nonprofit in her memory. As of Friday afternoon the page had reached the set goal.(WRAL) A man in Ohio has organized a GoFundMe for the driver who was charged in the accident. The page read, "Equipment failure happens on vehicle on a daily basis, Landen does not deserve to be slandered the way he is being on social media," and says that all funds donated will be split between Landen's defense, and the Brooks family. It also stated that if it is not fully funded by December 10, all donations will be refunded. (CBS17)
  3. The Wake County Board of Commissioners approved $2 million for transitional homes for foster kids struggling with mental health and/or substance-abuse issues. Many teenagers in Wake County foster care have been staying in hospitals, hotels and county offices when they are unable to be with their families. The $2 million will help start up three transitional group homes for 12-17-year olds. The county's goal is to give teens the treatment they need and give them a safe place to stay for a short period of time while they receive treatment. (WRAL)
  4. Some students at NC State remained on campus during the holiday weekend, as inflation has made it too expensive for many of them return home. Some international students were experiencing their first Thanksgiving in the states and went to purchase foods to prepare together. Students return to campus on Monday for the last week of the fall semester before final exams. (abc11) Some Triangle residents opted to dine out instead of cooking on Thanksgiving in response to rising inflation. (abc11) Triangle area caterers also limited their menus for Thanksgiving meals, as turkey shortages drove up the cost of the traditional main course. (abc11)
  5. Many Raleigh shoppers endured rain and heavy traffic as they went out to partake in Black Friday sales. Lines were long at Target, Kohls, malls and more across the city. At Crabtree Mall, traffic was backed up to the interstate around noon as a second wave of shoppers were heading out for deals. The National Retail Federation projects a record 166 million people will shop nationwide this weekend. (CBS17, WRAL)
