Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Raleigh police are searching for a 19-year-old man who fled the scene after a Thursday morning crash on I-440. Police are familiar with the suspect who crashed into the median and then ran from the scene when police arrived. Inside of his vehicle, police located marijuana and a stolen gun. (CBS17, WRAL)
  2. All lanes of Wake Forest Road near Duke Regional Hospital were closed for hours after two crashes took place in the area. The first wreck was fatal for Nicole Rumph, who was making a left turn on Wake Forest Road when another driver collided with her vehicle. The passenger in her vehicle and the other driver were taken to the hospital, and the other driver has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. Shortly after that incident another crash occurred, with no reported injuries. (abc11, CBS17, WRAL)
  3. North Carolina education officials have rejected Torchlight Academy's appeal to keep its doors open to students. Since the state board revoked its charter in March, the school has hired new leaders who appealed the revocation while presenting a plan for turning the school around. The Education Innovation Charter Schools committee deliberated for hours and voted unanimously against the schools due to concern about the financial health of the school. (WRAL)
  4. Thousands of apartments and condos are planned for downtown Raleigh. Downtown Raleigh Alliance's market report shows eight new building projects breaking ground in 2022, with another dozen currently underway. Since 2015, 3,415 housing units have been built downtown with 1,400 more under construction and 5,535 more planned or proposed. (CBS17)
  5. Snake season is around the corner, as they typically emerge during warmer months, May to September. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is reminding residents to give snakes distance. North Carolina is home to 38 native snake species, with six venomous, and ten listed as endangered or threatened. Wildlife officials are asking residents to report sightings of the pine snake and the rattlesnake as populations of the two are dwindling. (abc11, CBS17)
