Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. One man is in custody after a police chase in which he shot at officers. The pursuit came to an end near the intersection of New Bern Avenue and N. New Hope Road, closing down the intersection with crime scene tape. Police have not said what led to the chase or identified the suspects. No officers were hit by the gunfire and it is unclear if anyone else was injured during the incident. (FOX8)
  2. A Coors Light tractor trailer and a box truck overturned on Interstate 540 on Thursday morning. The crash was reported around 6:00 am and involved several other vehicles. Only one of the eastbound lanes was open to traffic until around 9:00 am. The cause of the collision has yet to be determined, though inclement weather and pooling may have played a role. (WRAL)
  3. The Wake County Public School System is expanding the Gaggle pilot program that monitors students' devices. Last year WCPSS changed the technology policy to allow monitoring, on any school issued devices or those connected to the school internet. The program was piloted at Knightdale High and has expanded it to 6 more schools, with two more to begin using the technology soon. (WRAL)
  4. Anglers from across the state came to Raleigh to protest overfishing on Thursday morning. Similar protests have taken place in other cities, and Rally for Resource are speaking out about over-harvesting and declining fish stocks. The group specifically called out the plans for shrimp and southern flounder, that they believe don't do enough to rebuild costal fish stocks. (WITN, abc12)
  5. Governor Cooper held a news conference on Thursday to address the state of emergency in North Carolina that went into place two years ago. Governor Cooper said that the State of Emergency will remain in place as it is still needed to give flexibility to healthcare providers with surges and distributing vaccines and treatment. (WITN)
