Here are the top six stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Thousands gathered to remember the life of 11-year-old Hailey Brooks and show support for Landen Glass who is facing multiple charges in connection with here death. The gathering was held on Saturday night at Buffalo Road Athletic Park. Organizers did not expect the turnout that they saw, with some people travelling from across the country to attend. The event hosted many from the truck community and they gathered to light candles to facilitate healing for those involved. (CBS17)
  2. Santa made an early visit to Raleigh's Roberts Community Center on Saturday. Families and their children filled the rooms at the early holiday celebration. The families got to enjoy crafts, music and raffles for presents. The event was made possible thanks to Raleigh Parks and Rec and the Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. fraternity brothers. One of the grandmothers in attendance also expressed gratitude over the presence of Black Santa, saying, "The complexion of the Santa is important too, for children to see a Saint Nick who looks like them." (abc11)
  3. Nursing shortages have been causing issues for healthcare facilities across the state. Wake Tech's nursing programs are working to fill gaps in the workforce, but graduations are still not meeting demand. NC Nursecast data says that even if Wake Tech graduations increase by 10%, there would still be a shortage of 10,000 registered nurses, and a shortage of 4,500 licensed practical nurses. (CBS17)
  4. A car caught fire at a Chick-fil-A in Raleigh on Saturday evening, and employees had to help extinguish the blaze. The vehicle was operated by a woman who had a small dog with her, neither were injured. The car caught fire shortly after 6:30 p.m. and restaurant workers were able to put it out with a fire extinguisher. (CBS17)
  5. Another car caught fire in Raleigh on Sunday morning after a car hit a parked car. According to the Raleigh Police Department, the crash took place around 4 p.m. near a home on Muxbere Way. The driver's vehicle was the one that caught fire and he was arrested and charged with DWI. (WRAL)
  6. A neighborhood in Cary is warning residents to keep eyes out for black bears. Bear sightings have been reported near the Kildaire Farms Racquet and Swim Club on Cary Parkway. The Homeowners Association sent a letter to community members to take extra caution when walking on trails and greenways in the area. (abc11)
