Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Homeowners in rural areas of Wake County are concerned with the plans to build a bypass for U.S. 401. The plan would expand the corridor to 19 miles of highway from Banks Road in Walker to Fuquay-Varina and into Lillington. The 401 bypass plans have been in the works for decades and could take another decade to break ground, but local landowners are concerned what the construction would mean for small business farmers. - A Ph.D. student is being praised after helping police track down and capture a larceny suspect. Rachel Nye was able to track her stolen credit card through usage, and went to a location where it was being used. After identifying the suspect, Nye gave officers live updates and movements of the suspect. Police arrested 40-year-old Benjamin Grayton Bollinger without incident, and connected him to three additional investigations. (CBS17)
- A Raleigh florist is celebrating the opportunity to have more than 1,000 roses featured on an episode of "Our Kind of People" on FOX. Tiera M. George was involved in a naming ceremony for a Durham judge and learned his daughter worked on the show. With only a day's notice, George was able to get 1,600 roses together for the occasion. While many business owners have been hurt by pandemic pressures and supply chain issues, George says they have maintained business throughout. (WRAL)
- The Target at Raleigh's North Hills is among 22 stores across the state that have had to pay fines over excessive price-scanner errors. Following three inspections, the North Hills Target has had to pay $4,560 and owes $1,685 in fines. The location has not passed any of its re-inspections with less than a 2% error rate, and has had an error rate as high as 9.33%. (CBS17)
- North Carolina justices are now being tasked with determining if two constitutional amendments should be struck down due to illegally gerrymandered districts. The nearly 30 legislators elected to districts that federal courts declared illegal racial gerrymanders in 2016 were allowed to remain in elected positions until the next elections in 2018. During that time, four constitutional amendments were passed, and since constitutional amendments require 3/5 support in each chamber and aren't subject to gubernatorial veto, the NAACP is challenging them.
