Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Raleigh and Durham police are warning that empty boxes can attract criminals to your address. RPD tweeted out several holiday safety tips and DPD has even set up cardboard drop-off sites in the city called "Operation: No Perched Packages." (WNCT9)
  2. The N.C. Court of Appeals will soon be deciding if students at NCSU and UNC can sue their schools to refund student fees under a breach-of-contract claim. During the pandemic, those two universities shut down their campuses and many facilities and services included in school fees. (The Laurinburg Exchange)
  3. Wake County is doubling capacity for COVID-19 testing following Christmas. (abc11) Now that sites have reopened, appointment bookings are filling up fast. (CBS17) Nearly 22% of the test results that came back on Sunday were positive, which is the highest positivity rate since the pandemic began. (WRAL)
  4. As Raleigh prepares for the acorn drop, the acorn's creator is taking care to make sure it is ready or the show. David Benson created the acorn in the 1990s and is tasked with polishing it every year ahead of New Year's. Although Benson has this notable claim to fame, he'd rather be known for his work at The Third Place Raleigh. (Spectrum News 1)
  5. Over the course of the pandemic, we have experienced inflation for goods and services across the board. Now fertilizer prices are rising so severely that farmers are being forced to reevaluate how they operate. With prices rising and agricultural technology requiring a large investment up front, N.C. farmers are fighting to survive. (abc11)
