Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh and anything we might have missed this week:
- The Garner Christmas Parade saw hundreds in attendance on Saturday evening. The route went straight down Main Street so that organizers could keep a better eye on safety. Other rules were in place after the death of 11-year-old Hailey Brooks in Raleigh during the Christmas Parade. All drivers had registration checks and driver checks, and they increased buffer sizes between groups. Families came together to enjoy the parade that went off without a hitch. (CBS17) The Apex Rotary Christmas Parade also took place on Saturday. The parade also had changes for safety, but community members were happy the tradition went on. (abc11)
- North Carolina State University issued a WolfAlert on Sunday after a sexual assault was reported on campus. The university police received a report of a sexual assault that took place at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. University police could not confirm if the suspect is affiliated with the university or not as a suspect has not been positively identified or apprehended. (abc11, CBS17)
- The death of a pilot who fell from a small airplane in July has been officially ruled an accident. The autopsy says that the death of Charles Hew Crooks was likely the result of falling from the back of the plane while vomiting. Crooks sustained extensive injuries and his cause of death is listed as multiple blunt force injuries. (WCNC, WSOC-TV)
- The North Carolina State Board of Education is planning to ask lawmakers to approve and fund a pilot program for teacher licensure. The proposed pilot program is smaller in scale than the recommendation for a statewide overhaul of licensure all at once. The plan would give higher instructor pay based on performance evaluations as opposed to years of experience. The board voted with no opposition for the pilot program before carrying it out statewide. (US News, WRAL)
- The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Service (NCDHHS) is appealing a court order that says the agency should offer individuals with disabilities the ability to choose their own care. The nonprofit, Disability Rights North Carolina, filed a lawsuit against DHHS and won. The court order was issued in November that says that DHHS is in "ongoing violation" of the North Carolina Persons with Disabilities Protection Act and has been "over-reliant" on institutionalizing people with disabilities. A superior court judge says there should be better community-service alternatives for those who do not want to be at a state-institution. Currently there are more than 16,000 people institutionalized while on a waiting list seeking an alternative setting. (abc11)
