Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Vice President Kamala Harris arrived in Raleigh on Monday, along with Democratic North Carolina representatives via Air Force Two. The group was joined by Governor Roy Cooper, Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and other local and state leaders for a roundtable discussion. The discussion, held at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, discussed small businesses. Harris emphasized the Biden Administration's commitment to small businesses, and met with area businesses who are struggling with the cost of inflation and other factors. (abc11, FOX8, WRAL)
  2. The families involved in an ongoing no-knock warrant case were set to address city leaders yesterday. The families and Emancipate NC scheduled a news conference in front of the Raleigh Municipal Building. The families have continued to spread a specific message, saying, "the only thing that I have been asking about. The only thing I've been asking them is just to apologize." The case is set to go into mediation next week, as Yolanda Irving and her neighbor Kenya Walton are suing the city in federal court after RPD officers carried out a raid on the wrong home. (abc11, CBS17)
  3. Recently, a study by WalletHub.com ranked Raleigh 13th nationally on a list of cities with the biggest homicide problems. The list placed Raleigh ahead of cities like Los Angeles, Los Vegas and New Orleans. Two Triangle experts on crime are pushing back on the ranking, saying that the site uses "noisy statistics." The study used homicides per capita in the last three months of 2022, homicides between the last three months of 2021, and the same time frame in 2022, and the percent change from the last three months of 2020 and 2022. Local experts are questioning why Raleigh was penalized on the list for having relatively low crime rates in 2020 and 2021, and also why the study only used statistics from October, November and December. (CBS17)
  4. On Thursday, the Student Government at North Carolina State University hosted Chats with the Chief. The discussion involved NC State Police Chief Dan House, as he discussed campus safety and transparency. House gave insight into how NC State Police prepare for incident response situations and spoke on their extensive training for such situations. He also said that there are plans to have NC State Police train with the Raleigh Police Department in the coming months, as RPD is their primary backup. House also talked about community engagement and other safety tips. The next Chats with the Chief is scheduled for February 23 and students are encouraged to attend. (The Technician)
  5. The City of Raleigh has proposed a bridge to be built over I-440 that would connect Barrett Drive with Quail Hollow Drive. The proposed midtown bridge would connect development on both sides of I-440 and help slow traffic speeds. The city is asking for resident input on the bridge, as well as options to provide for pedestrians and cyclists. You can submit your feedback here. The bridge is part of the Walkable Midtown Plan that was approved in December 2020. (CBS17)
