Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- Raleigh Police responded to an accident in which a construction worker was hit by an impaired school bus driver on Friday. The bus driver, Donald Edward Eli, was charged with driving while impaired, and the construction worker suffered injuries to his legs. No children were on the bus at the time of the accident, but the driver has been removed from driving duties for the Wake County Public School System and is suspended pending an investigation. - Two shootings took place on Friday in Raleigh. The first happened around 5:15 p.m. along Prosper Avenue near Globe Road. One person was arrested and the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries. (CBS17) Raleigh Police are searching for a suspect in the second Friday shooting that left one man injured. The man was shot multiple times at Star Street and Cross Street in Raleigh. It was reported just after 9:35 p.m. The extent of the victims injuries have not been reported. (CBS17, WRAL)
- Raleigh leaders have created a proposal to bring more affordable housing downtown. The plan would re-purpose city owned properties, building houses on several lots and putting money back into the plan. The city-owned land is currently an overgrown parking lot near Moore Square. The city would still own the land as part of a long-term land lease. (WRAL)
- As parents are struggling to find baby formula following recalls and supply chain disruptions, NC legislators are working to get baby formula back on shelves. Congresswoman Deborah Ross who represents much of Wake County is a cosponsor of the Access to Baby Formula Act that allows WIC recipients to purchase any formula with their cards. Ross also voted in favor of legislation to increase FDA inspection staff and help stop fraudulent baby formula from being sold. (CBS17)
- The CDC's independent advisory committee has authorized booster doses for the COVID-19 vaccines among children aged 5-11. As Wake County is now one of two counties in the state listed at medium risk, the news is receiving mixed reactions. Children who received their second dose of Pfizer/BioNTech before Dec. 20 is now eligible, and any parent who wants to book an appointment for their child to receive a booster dose can do so here.
