The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Raleigh.

Happy National New Friends Day Raleigh!
Yesterday, I started my intro emphasizing the beauty of our community, that comes together for one another. Today the news really highlights that, with news of:
- Runners worldwide stepping in to finish what Susan Karnatz started.
- Indictments in the death of Knightdale officer Ryan Hayworth.
- A portrait painted to honor Gabriel Torres.
But first, today's weather:
Mostly sunny and cool. High: 59 Low: 36.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Raleigh who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Raleigh Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top six stories in Raleigh today:
- Runners across the world are taking time to finish the run that Raleigh mother Susan Karnatz was unable to complete. Karnatz was just over five miles into her evening run on Thursday when she was fatally shot. Her husband, Tom Karnatz said that she died around 1.9 miles short of her seven-mile goal that day. Runners are now sharing photos of their 1.9 mile routes under the hashtag #RunforSue. Runners from Panama, Australia and Ireland have already dedicated their daily runs to her. Tom Karnatz wrote, "I'm amazed at all the support," on Facebook after completing his own 1.9 mile run with his sons, niece and brother. (abc NEWS, WSOC-TV)
- Residents surrounding the Hedingham community are raising questions about why no alert system was activated during Thursday's shooting. People in the community were unaware of the events unfolding until they found out via social media, texts or when police ushered them back into their homes. Wake County Emergency Management has a notification system called "Ready Wake," that can alert people about things such as flooding and police activity. There is also a state-run emergency alert system, and a public alert program through FEMA, but residents received no alerts in the active shooter situation. (CBS17)
- On Monday, Wake County leaders and legal stakeholders announced the creation of a legal support center. The center is expected to open in January in the Wake County courthouse and aims to offer free information on civil matters. A statewide assessment by NC Equal Access to Justice Commission and the Equal Justice Alliance found unmet legal needs. Currently Legal Aid offers free services to low-income families, but the need is growing and many are left in an earnings gap that disqualifies them from aid. (abc11)
- Kane Realty announced its plans for a 6,000-square-foot food and beverage destination in the North Hills Innovation District. The area will include an outdoor seating area and will add a "central gathering place" to North Hills. Construction on the space is scheduled to begin next summer and expected to be completed by 2024. (CBS17)
- One man has been hospitalized following a Cary house fire on Monday morning. Cary Fire Department crews responded to the home on Grey Fox Court around 7 a.m. There were a total of five adults in the home, four escaped on their own, but firefighters helped to rescue the fifth. His condition is unknown at this time. (WRAL)
- A Wake County grand jury has indicted Dedric Romero Privette on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Knightdale police officer a year ago today. Officer Ryan Hayworth was killed on October 17, 2021 when his cruiser was struck by a car driven by Privette, who was allegedly going 80 mph. Privette was also indicted on Monday on a DWI charge, careless and reckless driving, felony serious injury and failing to move over for an emergency vehicle. Knightdale Police Chief Lawrence Capps says that this indictment is a huge step toward justice. (abc11)
