Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Wake County students returned to classrooms Monday. With some schools opening, brand new this year Wake County is home to 198 schools. The district is the largest school district in the state with 159,000 students. Wake County is still working to fill teacher and bus driver vacancies. Some classes are without permanent teachers and the district has reduced bus routes this year. There will be 52 fewer bus routes operating than last year for a total of 584.   2. On Monday, the Raleigh Police Department investigated two crashes on Capital Boulevard. Before 1 a.m., there were two separate crashes on opposite sides of the road. No one was seriously hurt and police are investigating the crashes. One of the cars that sustained the most damage was found to be stolen. Officers arrested the two men inside. (WRAL)
  3. On Saturday, public school advocates rallied outside of the statehouse in Raleigh to push lawmakers to comply with a lower court ruling in the Leandro case. The State Supreme Court is set to hear the case this week, as the fourth time the case has gone before the highest court. Speakers talked about how much time has passed since plaintiffs from low-wealth counties first filed in May 1994. (WHQR)
  4. A Cary mother has been charged in the death of her two young daughters, after officers responded to a Saturday night call at Duke Raleigh Hospital regarding the dead sisters. Police did not say whether the sisters, age 3 and 2, were alive when they arrived, but their mother, Launice Shanique Battle was arrested at the hospital. It is still unclear what led to the deaths of the girls. Battle was set for her first court appearance on Monday. According to birth records, Battle also has a 6-year-old son.   5. On Saturday, just before 5 p.m. a pedestrian was struck on I-40 near mile marker 291. The victim's identity has not been released, but on Sunday, police confirmed that person had died from their injuries. Details of the crash are unknown, but police have not filed charges yet. (abc11) On Sunday, a driver crashed a car into a building that was under construction, causing the vehicle to catch fire. Two people have been detained and the driver is facing charges. (WRAL)
