But first, today's weather:
Mostly sunny. High: 71 Low: 53.
Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:
- During Tuesday's Wake County Board of Commissioners meeting, the board unanimously approved paid wellness leave for county employees. County officials say it will give employees time off to dedicate to mental health and wellbeing. Full and part-time employees can use two days of leave for wellness activities, preventative care, and support services like therapy. This move is the latest part of their goal to promote a good work-life balance. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina Department of Transportation has announced a timeline for the resurfacing project from Wake Forest Road to Wade Avenue on I-440. A contract has officially been awarded and preliminary work will begin in the winter, with the actual resurfacing to start in the spring, and completion expected in summer of 2024. The DOT has received an abundance of complaints from residents that prompted the fast tracking of the project. (abc11)
- The Raleigh State Fair has announced the list of new foods that will be at the 2022 State Fair. I'm personally most excited about the deep fried Cuban rolls, the DoriEsquites and the Thanksgiving stuffed turkey leg! (abc11, WRAL) The fair will also be holding an accessABILITY Day to include events and activities for people with disabilities to be able to participate in. (The Daily Tar Heel)
- A new ranking by Money has named Raleigh the No. 4 Best Place to Live in the US. The ranking looked at economic opportunities, quality of life, diversity, and "where the best futures lie." Raleigh was able to outrank so many cities thanks to the more than 9,000 acres of green space, diverse restaurants and events, and notable employers. Chapel Hill was also among the top 50, coming in at #12. (WRAL)
- State law enforcement officers have begun "Operation Crash Reduction," and encouraging drivers to slow down through October 9. Mark Ezzell, the director of the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program says that North Carolina roads have experienced an epidemic of high-speed crashes, hence the focus on speed for this year's crash reduction. (WITN) In 2021, 424 people died in speed-related crashes, and this year 300 people have already been killed. (NCDOT)

- Volunteers from the area are joining others across the country with the Red Cross to bring aid to Florida communities impacted by hurricane Ian. (Spectrum News 1)
