Happy Free Comic Book Day Raleigh!

Before I get into the news, I want to share with you a bit of news that is meaningful to me. It's not one of the "Top 5" stories listed, but The Blood Connection has an urgent need for blood in Eastern NC. This particular story is really meaningful to me, because I am O negative, but I'm unable to give due to my grandmother's death to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). When I see blood shortages, especially for O negative, it eats me up that I am ineligible to donate blood, and I just want to encourage you to give if you are able. (WNCT9)

Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Wake County is the third-fastest growing county in the United States, with more than 20,000 people who moved here in 2021. The county has more than 1 million residents and is growing more than twice as fast as the rest of the state. Wake County sees an average of 62.5 people moving here per day. Wake County's proposed budget is a response to the rapid growth, but construction plans struggle to keep up with the pace. (WRAL, WakeGov)
  2. Crowds gathered in downtown Raleigh for National Day of Prayer on Thursday. Amidst all of the chaos in the world right now, crowds gathered and prayed for guidance in the uncertainty. A large group was across from the State Legislative Building, but the observance was a-political, without divisive talk. (WRAL)
  3. One person was taken to the hospital after being cut with a meat cleaver at a Raleigh motel on Friday. Officers responded to the Wake Inn on New Bern Ave around 5:35 am. The suspect, Alavanus Christi Walker went to the victim's motel room and hit him with the cleaver when he opened the door. Walker is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and is being held under a $100,000 bond. (CBS17)
  4. An argument at a Raleigh apartment complex led to the death of a resident's dog on Friday at around 1:00 am. During the fight, the dog got out and bit two individuals. The two who were bitten suffered minor injuries, but someone in the crowd shot and killed the dog. Animal Control is helping investigate the incident and no arrests have been made at this time. (CBS17, WRAL)
  5. Just before 5:00 pm on Thursday, a woman was dragged near the Quality Inn in east Raleigh. Two women were leaning into a black SUV when one was pulled into the vehicle and dragged across the intersection while her friend chased behind yelling. The car then spun around and crashed at the intersection of New Bern Avenue and Hedingham Boulevard. The woman who has not been identified was taken to the hospital and the man who was driving has been arrested. (CBS17, WRAL)
