Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Around 11 p.m. on Thursday, a Wake County deputy was killed in the line of duty. Sheriff Gerald Baker identified the deputy as 48-year-old Ned Byrd, a deputy who was with the department for 13 years. Byrd was responding to a call on Auburn Knightdale Road, and was shot multiple times outside of his patrol car. The investigation into what happened is underway as the person who killed Byrd is unidentified and at large. (abc11, CBS17, FOX NEWS, Spectrum News 1, WCNC, WFMY, WRAL)
  2. On Thursday, Congressman David Price (NC-04) and Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) announced that the Federal Transit Administration has awarded $35 million to help Raleigh design and construct the Wake Bus Rapid Transit: New Bern Avenue Project. The funding comes from the 2020 omnibus bill that was enacted on December 20, 2019. During the announcement, Congresswoman Ross said that "Wake County is a powerful economic engine for our state and region, and we need reliable, efficient, transportation options to match out continued growth." (CBS17)
  3. Wake County has agreed to pay nearly $400,000 to settle a federal, collective action lawsuit filed in March of 2021. The lawsuit was filed by emergency medical service workers who claimed they were owed money for overtime hours. The original plaintiff, Steven Gorrell, was joined by around 120 others after a federal judge moved the case to a class-action lawsuit. The county adjusted how workers were paid prior to the lawsuit, however Gorrell pursued the lawsuit to secure back-pay. (WRAL)
  4. Multiple police cars were present in a southeast Raleigh neighborhood investigating an afternoon shooting on Thursday. Multiple gunshots were fired into a mobile home on Schenley Drive. A man was treated at the scene for his injuries, and a woman was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and has not been identified.(CBS17, WRAL)
  5. Firefighters responded to a fire at a AAA repair shop in Cary on Thursday night. Smoke was visible from the shop around 7:30 p.m. Firefighters believe the fore started on the roof or attic area, but have not connected the fire to storms that moved through the area. No one was in the repair shop when the fire began. (WRAL) In unrelated news for firefighters, the state has begun making payments out of the new $15 million fund to aid firefighters who have developed cancer. (WRAL)

From my notebook:

  • It's Garage Sale Day and The Raleigh Market is open from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. It's got all the thrill of a garage sale, without the driving around trying to figure out what houses are selling.
  • Raleigh's gun buyback event is taking place today at Mount Peace Baptist Church on Raleigh Boulevard. You can receive gift cards up to $200 for unwanted firearms. (abc11)
  • Shop Local Raleigh is now accepting applications from local vendors to be included in October 15th's "Falling For Local" event. (Shop Local Raleigh Instagram)
  • Raleigh's oldest craft beer maker, Big Boss Brewing will be closing its taproom at Wicker Drive, and are in the process of finding a new location to open by 2023. (abc11)
