The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Raleigh.

Happy America Recycles Day Raleigh!

I woke up yesterday and the temperature was freezing! I don't know about you but I actually like a little cool air and cozy blanket. So go grab your fuzziest socks, a cozy robe, and a hot beverage while you curl up and read all the news and events for Raleigh today, including:

  • NCSU Student Government weighs in on student suicides.
  • Youth enjoy free screening of "Wakanda Forever."
  • Details on the 78th Annual Christmas Parade.

But first, today's weather:

Cloudy with rain developing. High: 49 Low: 43.

Here are the top six stories today in Raleigh:

  1. In a ceremony on Monday, Wake County graduated the largest ever class of paramedics. Wake County Emergency Medical Services received more than 123,000 calls for help last year and high demand for services and increased competition for employees have made it difficult to recruit and retain paramedics. On Monday, 52 recruits graduated from the county's 38th EMS academy. Wake County has increased pay and created training programs in an attempt to get more paramedics and EMTs in the area. (WRAL)
  2. Following the fourth student suicide at N.C. State this year, the Student Senate has passed the Campus Suicide Prevention and Response Act. The passing of the act will establish an official opinion of the Student Government to share with campus officials addressing its concerns about the lack of physical barriers on high places on campus and the limited progress toward becoming a JED Campus. The bill was passed in order to push the university to be more transparent and better support students. (Technician)
  3. The City of Raleigh is in the process of developing a new park that will likely be the first greenway connection from Crabtree Creek Greenway to Downtown Raleigh. During the concept design process, the city heard from residents, expressing concerns over the name: Devereux Meadow Park. The name Devereux traces back to John Devereux Jr., who was known to be a plantation and slave owner. Although the city maintains that the name refers to a former minor league baseball stadium located on the site from the 1940s-1970s, advisory board members recommended renaming the project. Residents were given the opportunity to rank potential names for the park. Devereux Park will be renamed Smoky Hollow Park. (CBS17)
  4. One hundred teens and tweens were able to enjoy a free screening of "Wakanda Forever" on Sunday at the Regal Cinemas in Brier Creek. Attorney Julian Hall supplied the tickets. He expressed that he wanted to give the youth the opportunity to see positive Black male representation. Representatives from the Purpose Learning Lab were happy that they were able to bring the youth out to participate in the screening, saying, "it's very important for our kids to be here, to see it together with people who look like us." (abc11)
  5. Neighbors at the Cortland East Midtown apartments off Six Forks Road were uneasy after discovering what appeared to be a noose hanging from a tree at the complex. The object was spotted on Sunday, but it was not removed until after 9 a.m. on Monday when a staff member removed it from the tree. Upon removal, the community discovered that the object was a dog leash, however the discovery has not eased the concerns of all residents. Thus far, no one has claimed the leash or come forward to acknowledge putting it in the tree. (WRAL)
  6. One of the two brothers accused of killing Wake County deputy Ned Byrd will plead guilty to charges of possession of a firearm by an illegal alien. Alder Alfonso Marin-Sotelo has been held at the Forsyth County Jail on a federal immigration detainer to allow the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement to investigate his legal status in the country. Alder Alfonso Marin-Sotelo and his older brother Arturo Marin-Sotelo are both charged in the murder of deputy Byrd and face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted. (WRAL)
