Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:
- Wake County has unveiled its FaithAction ID that will allow residents who are unable to obtain a state-issued ID or drivers license to have a formal ID. The identification cards will be accepted by the Alliance Medical Ministry, the Raleigh Police Department, and the Wake County Sheriff's Office. Having an identification card is critical for receiving medical care and in interactions with law enforcement. Sheriff Gerald Baker says that having this kind of identification is long overdue. (CBS17)
- A condo fire early Wednesday morning took the life of two at the Walden Woods Condominiums in northeast Raleigh. A grandmother and her grandchild were both killed in the fire, a mother and infant were rescued as well as another child, and three more people were taken to the hospital with injuries. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, but the building did not have working sprinklers or smoke detectors. (abc11, WRAL)
- Attorneys for a group of Black mothers and their children in Raleigh filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Raleigh and several officers after the mistaken raids on their homes. The lawsuit alleges that the RPD narcotics team knew that the information and evidence was bad but pursued it anyways, with excessive force. The first named officer, former Detective Omar Abdullah was fired last year after investigation into his wrongful arrests of young Black men in Raleigh. (abc11)
- Raleigh police have issued an arrest warrant in the traffic collision that killed two Raleigh men back on February 6. Multiple investigating agencies have determined that Juan Morales was driving while impaired at the time of the crash. Investigators have not determined if his impairment was directly related to the collision, but Morales has officially been charged with driving while impaired. (CBS17)
- The panel of judges tasked with selecting North Carolina voting maps made additional changes to the congressional maps on Wednesday, and upheld the new General Assembly districts. Regarding the U.S. House map, judges said that, "the remedial congressional plan does not satisfy the Supreme Court's standards." If the maps are not subjected to an appeal, candidate filing will resume today at 8:00 am. (WTOP)
