Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Two brothers have been indicted on murder charges in the death of Wake County Deputy Ned Byrd. Arturo Marin-Sotelo was charged previously, and now a grand jury has also indicted his brother Alder Alfonso Marin-Sotelo as a suspect. (WBTV, WCTI12) Byrd's landlord has also been charged with stealing guns and other valuables following his death. Andrew Culbreth is alleged to have stolen items that totaled at least $10,000 that belonged to Byrd. (WRAL)
  2. On Monday, leaders in Wake County discussed a new violence interruption program. The goal of the program is to reduce gun violence with the help of multiple organizations. The two part program will involve coordinating with law-enforcement regarding information on gun violence, and having a human services intervention element. The city of Raleigh is working on its own violence intervention program similar to the one being utilized in Durham. Commissioner Matt Calabria said the Wake County program won't be the same as Raleigh's but it also won't be disconnected from the city's efforts. (CBS17)
  3. Businesses along Hillsborough Street are hoping that the return of students to campus will provide a long awaited boost in sales. Throughout summer, restaurants were offering the Wednesday $5 food walk to get customers in. Jeff Murisos, President and CEO of Live It Up! Hillsborough Street said that food and beverage sales are now consistently above pre-pandemic levels. Packapalooza will also be returning for the first time since 2019, celebrating its 1oth year Saturday. (abc11)
  4. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) announced that seven North Carolina communities will receive a combined $3.4 million to help fund mobility hubs through several cities, including Raleigh. NCDOT and the Virginia Department of Transportation are working to restore passenger train service through Petersburg, VA and Raleigh, NC. The Southeast Corridor Commission hopes that reinstating train traffic along the S-Line will help create a new commuter rail service in the Triangle and also become the "missing link" for new Amtrak services. (WCNC)
  5. A Cary family woke up on Sunday morning to discover that their car was stolen from their driveway in the night. They are one of 24 families who had their vehicles stolen from Cary in the last month. The theft was recorded on video, showing two individuals walking through the neighborhood, trying car door handles. Of the 24 recent car thefts in Cary, only 12 of the vehicles have been recovered. Friday in Raleigh:

From my notebook:

  • It's National Burger Day, and when I first came to Raleigh for school in 2012, someone told me that MoJoe's Burger Joint was the place for a good burger. I have to say, it has never disappointed, and if you find yourself wanting to celebrate, I highly recommend it!
  • The City of Raleigh will be hosting two job fairs in September to fill open positions, starting at $18 an hour. (CBS17)
  • Epicurean Butter LLC has issued a recall for the 3.5oz tubs of "Wegmans Lemon Dill Finishing Butter." (CBS17)
  • Big Boss Brewing Co. is hosting a last hurrah moving out party today. There will be raffles, prices, and deals as they prepare to close their historic location. (3 - 10 p.m.)

That's it for today! I'll see you around.
