Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:
- Questions have lingered regarding the death of Charles Crooks during an emergency landing on Friday. On Tuesday, the City of Raleigh released a 911 call that came in at 2:34 p.m. from a staff member of the FAA air traffic control tower at RDU. The staff member told the 911 dispatcher, "We have a pilot that was inbound to the field. His co-pilot jumped out of the aircraft. He made impact on the ground and here are the coordinates." Investigators have not confirmed that Crooks intentionally jumped at this time, and the surviving pilot has not been interviewed yet by investigating authorities. (CBS17, Queen City News, WRAL)
- Wake County Schools hosted their board meeting on Tuesday, and made some notable changes. School system leaders presented the change to move away from conducting voluntary COVID-19 testing on campus and instead provide families with at-home testing kits. The board also spent time discussing how to protect immunocompromised students, though most board members were against bringing back a mask mandate. (WRAL) The board also voted for traditional schools to not hold school on Election Day in Wake County. (WRAL)
- Raleigh police officers came out to more than a dozen neighborhoods for National Night Out. Residents at some of the stops said that the event allowed them to connect with cops in a fun environment. Residents got to enjoy food, music, and receive free backpacks full of school supplies. Some of the concerns shared with officers included calls to have a stronger presence and more transparency within the police force. (abc11)
- The FTC has fined tech real estate company Opendoor $62 million for "cheating potential home sellers into thinking they can make more than using the traditional sales process." Opendoor has purchased homes throughout the Triangle and currently lists more than 4,000 homes for sale in the Raleigh-Durham area. The company says that "the allegations raised by the FTC are related to activity that took place between 2017 and 2019, and targeted marketing that was modified years ago. (CBS17)
- Rusty's Rescue Ranch is working to find homes for 24 dogs and six cats, as they have been forced to stop taking in animals due to donation stalls. Instead of being able to take in more animals, they will be focusing on fundraising and placing their current pets. As inflation has driven up costs, donations have plateaued significantly. Founder Kathalene Murphy hopes they will be able to reopen soon, but will be changing the structure of the organization. (WRAL)
- A Garner police officer was able to save an 11 day old child who stopped breathing. His mother says his family was on the road home to Linden after celebrating a birthday, when the boy's great-grandmother noticed him making a strange noise and turning blue. They were driving through Garner and pulled over near the intersection of Fayetteville Road and Garner Station Boulevard. Officer Warren Frey was parked at a church less than a mile away and was able to respond to the family within minutes and begin infant CPR. (WRAL)
