Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:

  1. Wake County school board members met to discuss steps to keep students safe on Tuesday. The board's security assessment update hoped to give insight on preventing similar threats to those that prompted school lockdowns last week. The board is reviewing history and objectives moving forward. Parents with students in the Wake County Public School System hopes the board will address issues. (abc11) A presentation from the BeSmart campaign was set to follow the discussions, put on by non-profit Everytown for Gun Safety. (CBS17) The six lockdowns on Friday caused many to look at school safety and student accountability, but school districts in North Carolina are not required to keep track of threats of violence on campus. (WRAL)
  2. The Wake County Sheriff's Office is preparing to incorporate new technology that will monitor speed and collect license plate information at the same time. The device, a speed trailer, will be purchased with part of a $56,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice. The trailer does not issue automatic tickets, but it will provide a dual use in high traffic flow areas. The trailer can incorporate looking for vehicles associated with crime nationwide while reducing speed in the area. If the department is alerted to a wanted vehicle, Sheriff Willie Rowe says that officers will still need to do their due diligence to verify that it is the actual vehicle and confirm the information before taking action.(CBS17)
  3. Residents at the Prince George Lane apartment building are reeling after a fire displaced multiple units. Several residents are also raising questions about why no fire alarms went off to alert them. At least one resident says that she was alerted via a smoke alarm, but others say that there were none to be heard. The building was inspected last in June 2022, and it was noted that there were several extinguishers that may not have been within the 'inspection time frame.' The cause of the fire is still under investigation. (CBS17) One of the victims who was taken to the hospital in one of the recent fires, is dealing with grief of losing her home and their dog. Anastasia Hall's best friend Zoey has created a GoFundMe to help her friend in the aftermath, and the community has come together to raise nearly $15,000 for the family. (WRAL)
  4. The area is preparing for the upcoming NHL Stadium Series in Raleigh, that is expected to bring around $12 million to the area. The game is the first time that the Hurricanes will take part in or host an outdoor game. The Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance estimates the game alone to bring $12.4 million to the area, and does not include events leading up to the game in the estimate. (abc11, CBS17)
  5. The LuminoCity Festival is coming to Raleigh's Pullen Park later this month. The light festival, "aims to blur the lines between reality and virtuality through original storytelling and larger than life light art sculptures," and includes moving dinosaur sculptures and blooming cherry blossoms. The event will run from February 18 through April 9 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. nightly. (WRAL)
