- Kane Realty Corporation has announced plans for another high-rise development in downtown Raleigh. The West End II would be its second mixed-use development in the West End near the Warehouse District. The plans include 4,000 square feet of ground level retail, two stories of parking and five floors of apartments. If approved, the groundbreaking would take place in the summer of 2023, with completion anticipated by spring 2025. (CBS17, WRAL) A report on new apartment construction from RentCafe.com shows nearly 10,000 new apartments set to be added in 2022. (CBS17)
- Following the death of Sheriff's Deputy Ned Byrd, Wake County's K-9 unit has undergone a staff shake-up. The Wake County Sheriff's Office has provided a reassignment list showing promotions, transfers and demotions. It involves some of Byrd's closest colleagues. Three K-9 officers are being moved to different positions and extensive training will be required for any new officers moving to the unit. Among the moves, K-9 Officer Devin Richardson is being reassigned to work in detention at the county jail, and according to other deputies, is devastated by the move. Richardson was close with Officer Byrd and some of the other deputies that have been reassigned were involved in his murder investigation. (WRAL)
- This month, Raleigh will once again join the Lights Out for Bird Migration efforts. Beginning September 10, through November 30, all non-essential lighting in city facilities will be turned off between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Migratory bird populations have been in serious decline and turning off lights helps prevent collisions. The efforts will also help save costs by reducing energy consumption. The city encourages all residents to partake in the effort as well. (Raleigh NC)
- A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Falls of Neuse Road on Thursday afternoon. According to police, the motorcyclist was travelling northbound around 4:30 p.m., when a car exiting a parking lot pulled out in front of them. The motorcyclist whose identity has not been released was pronounced dead at the scene. No charges have been filed at this time. (abc11, CBS17)
- The Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh has implemented a new bag policy to improve security. The venue now requires that all bags be no bigger than 12 inches long, wide, and 10 inches deep.
