Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A Raleigh homeowner on Rock Quarry Road was awoken by a car running into their home just before 5:30 a.m. The crash happened after police were chasing the vehicle in a search that was called off about 45 minutes prior to the accident. The driver fled the scene as the car had extensive damage to the front end. No one was injured and the homeowner was not displaced. (abc11, WRAL)
  2. Monday storms brought tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings throughout the area, and widespread damage was reported as a result. In southeast Raleigh powerlines and trees were downed with roads blocked. The most significant damage was west of us, in Chapel Hill and Durham, where several fires started due to lightning strikes and downed power lines. (CBS17)
  3. Sandra Kelly and Andres Soto were rescued from the May 11 apartment fire in Raleigh that displaced 17. After recovering from the smoke inhalation sustained while barricaded in their bathroom, the couple was reunited with the firefighters who rescued them. Raleigh Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Seibel said the incident was, "one of the most dramatic rescues" he has experienced in his 26 year career. (CBS17)
  4. One woman was stabbed around 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday at a Raleigh apartment complex. Police arrived to the complex on Hillrock Drive and found the woman with a non-life threatening injury to the abdomen. Officers say another woman stabbed the victim, but no one is in custody at this time. (abc11)
  5. Triangle Restaurant Week begins on June 6, but the celebration is facing persistent challenges that are making it difficult to participate. As food costs and worker shortages persist, restaurant owners are still struggling to meet everyday expectations and therefore are less inclined to sign up to participate. This year only about 10 restaurants have signed up, while in previous years more than 100 were involved. (abc11)

  • NC State University is set to welcome the largest freshman class in their history. (CBS17)
  • The Downtown Raleigh diner and historical landmark The Mecca Restaurant has officially reopened. (Instagram)
  • The City of Raleigh is now accepting interest forms from Raleigh residents interested in serving on our Community Engagement Board. (City of Raleigh)
