Happy National Mac and Cheese Day,

Today's news brings two more fires in the Raleigh city limits, a scared bear cub, a new park edition that makes Raleigh even more appealing, and proof that Raleigh is already pretty dang appealing. Check out all that as well as events and some bonus stories in the notebook below.

Today's weather: Humid and partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 91 Low: 76.

Here are the top stories in Raleigh today:

  1. A black bear cub was spotted in a tree at Rex Hospital. Wildlife Management Division Chief Brad Howard estimated the bear to be between 1-1.5 years old. This time of year it is common for mother bears to push their sons out on their own to prepare for the next litter. Officials hope that if left alone, the cub will find its way down over night when it is not as scared of people to find safety. (abc11) This comes as part of a larger pattern of wildlife being spotted in city areas. (WRAL)
  2. A fire at a recycling center forced crews to close a side road in Raleigh on Tuesday morning. The fire originated Monday Night at Wall Recycling Rowland Facility, and when it became clear that the crews working could not put it out themselves, they called for assistance from firefighters. As the fire continued, it got into tree debris and became unpredictable. The fire billowed so much it went miles into the sky and engulfed surrounding areas. (abc11)
  3. A house fire took the life of two Raleigh residents early Tuesday morning. 46-year-old Anna Brodie died in the fire, and 75-year-old Hampton Bunch died at the hospital after being pulled from the blaze. The single story home was without smoke detectors, and took more than an hour to put out. (WRAL)
  4. The Carolina Panthers Play 60 Challenge Course opened at Raleigh's Barwell Road Park. The park is the first of its kind featuring obstacle course elements, slides, and more. The park is designed for kids of all ages and especially appeals to those who have outgrown typical park play areas. The Carolina Panthers organization contributed $150,000 in equipment to the park, the rest came from a city parks bond program. (abc11, CBS17)
  5. The Triangle has been ranked as the second best place to live in the U.S. for 2021-2022. Our wonderful home jumped 9 spots this year, and was only surpassed by Boulder, CO. The rankings were determined based on 5 criteria: desirability, value, job market, quality of life, and net migration. Check out the breakdown of how Raleigh-Durham secured the #2 spot here. (abc11)
