Happy National Green Juice Day Raleigh!

I don't know about you, but yesterday's rainy vibe was exactly what I needed. I personally love the rain, and not just because it gets me out of a trip to the playground. There's something so incredibly refreshing about rain to me. I hope you feel refreshed as well, and can enjoy getting caught up on all things Raleigh, including:

  • Community rallies to provide for Rizk family
  • Esteamed Coffee Game Night
  • Raleigh's James Beard Semifinalist

But first, today's weather:

Partly sunny and cooler. High: 52 Low: 27.

Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:

  1. Representatives for the family of Darryl Williams spoke at a news conference on Tuesday morning, calling for immediate police reform. Kerwin Pittman, a social justice activist, is asking for more answers for the family. Although the 5-day report disclosed that Williams was tased three times in total, Pittman wants to know why he was tased while running away, what side of the body was first stunned, and how long the shock hits lasted. There have also been questions surrounding the initial approach of Williams's vehicle, as RPD was doing proactive patrols in an area identified as high-crime. (abc11)
  2. The North Carolina returned to Raleigh after the two-week January break. Floor meetings were scheduled in The House and Senate marking the beginning of the two-year legislative session. Republicans in charge of both chambers are expected to work on key issues that were unresolved in 2022, including adoption of Medicaid expansion, legalization of medical marijuana, and sports gambling. It is also likely that the GOP will pursue new abortion restrictions following the Dobbs decision last June. (abc11, WCNC, WNCT9, WRAL)
  3. Following the death of a couple on Castlebrook Drive just outside of Raleigh, the community has rallied to help raise money for the couple's children. George Rizk and Diana Rizk were killed in a Mondy night fire, leaving behind their two adult sons Salib and Christian. In a GoFundMe organized by one of the Salib's employers the community had already gathered around $24,000 for the sons as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The two men also lived in the home, but were not there at the time of the fire. (abc11, WRAL)
  4. Raleigh police responded to a shooting that took place at an Extended Stay in Raleigh on Tuesday. The victim fled the scene in a silver dodge Durango to Watson Electrical. Around 8:30 p.m. police received a call, and they arrived at the Appliance Court and North Raleigh Boulevard location to find one man suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the foot. (CBS17, WRAL)
  5. The Raleigh Retro Gamers announced that their summer expo will take place at Raleigh's Moore Square Park in June. The expo will highlight a range of collectables, vintage toys, clothing, and more. This summer's expo is expected to host over 50 food trucks and be twice the size of last years' event. The expo will be free to the public and vendors can apply to participate here. (WRAL)
