Here are the top five stories today in Raleigh:

  1. The results are in for the Wake County Democratic Sheriff's runoff and Willie Rowe will proceed to the November election. Rowe defeated incumbent Gerald Baker to secure the party nomination. Rowe had approximately 75% of votes in the runoff election and will face former Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison. (abc11, INDY Week, WRAL)
  2. For most of Wake County, the school year begins in five weeks. Several former and current teachers have raised concerns about teacher vacancies at currently more than 400. A spokesperson for the Wake County Public School System said that the vacancies are relatively low and the district feels good about staffing. One assistant principal pushed back stating that four teachers recently left her school in a week and the applicants to replace them are not qualified. (CBS17, WRAL)
  3. A new nonprofit has launched in Raleigh that will offer free access to the arts for youth and adults in the area. Art of Discovery will offer classes including arts, speaking, graphic design, drama, literary, college and career readiness and more. Workshops and programs will take place at the Green Road and Chavis community centers. (Spectrum News 1)
  4. The trial has begun for Nancy Errichetti, former head mistress of the Montessori School of Raleigh, who rejected a plea deal for her role in a sex abuse scandal. A jury will now decide if she allowed the sexual abuse of a student to continue under her supervision. Former middle school teacher Nicholas Conlon Smith is already serving 17 years in state prison for numerous crimes related to the abuse of two students at the school. (WRAL)
  5. Builders in the area are working to move inventory as the rise in interest rates might be deterring potential buyers. Builders are cutting prices and offering incentives towards closing. Throughout the pandemic, there were no incentives being put forward as the housing market was incredibly hot. If you are searching for a new construction, there is more flexibility now to negotiate for your home. (abc11)
