Here are the top five stories in Raleigh today:
- The manhunt for Raequan Mudd was called off on Tuesday after the Raleigh Police Department began investigating a suicide within a woman's home. Wednesday I stated that Mudd was in police custody as I did not have all the details while writing the recap, but neighbors informed news outlets that Mudd was the individual who committed suicide. Kimberly Turcic has been charged with harboring an escapee among other charges. (WRAL)
- On Tuesday, Wake County welcomed another powerful woman to the office of police chief. Lorie Smith took over the role in Garner, and says that former Raleigh Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown was one of the first in the area and inspired her. Chief Smith's top priority is expanding the police force and recruiting more minorities and women to reflect the community. (abc11)
- As we near closer to Christmas, Wake County is reminding the community to recycle their live Christmas trees. The Happy Trails Christmas Tree Recycling Program will allow Wake County to recycle the trees into mulch that can help maintain park trails around the county. Eight sites to drop off Christmas trees will open on December 26 and will remain open until January 23, from 7:00 am-7:00 pm. (CBS17)
- The North Carolina State men's basketball program has been put on probation by the NCAA following violations around former player Dennis Smith Jr. The investigation into recruiting violations lasted more than four years and NCSU is appreciative of the careful review, and to not be subjected to a postseason ban. (CBS17)
- Governor Roy Cooper has expressed that he plans to endorse Democrat Cheri Beasley for the U.S. Senate. Beasley's opponent Jeff Jackson dropped out of the race last week and endorsed Beasley. Cooper says that "the path is clear for her now." U.S. Rep. Ted Budd, former Governor Pat McCrory, and former Rep. Mark Walker are all vying for the Republican nomination. (WCNC)
