WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel Takes Medical Leave of Absence

​One of the most well-known faces in Triangle area will be off the air for the near future: Greg Fishel is taking a medical leave of absence

One of the most well-known faces in local news for the Triangle area will be off the air for the near future: WRAL meteorologist Greg Fishel is taking a medical leave of absence. The announcement was made both on air and on the WRAL website.

The station did not announce the specific cause. WRAL vice president and general manager Steve Hammel said they expect Fishel to be back on the air by late March.

“We are holding Greg in our prayers and wishing him a speedy recovery. We expect Greg to be back on the air in late March. We wanted to let you know, so you wouldn’t wonder where he was,” the station wrote.

According to Hammel, meteorologist Mike Maze will fill in for Fishel. He’ll handle the weekday 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. broadcasts. Meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth will take Maze’s duties durng the 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. three days a week and still continue with her weekend duties as usual.

Fishel has been a mainstay of the Triangle for years. He has been at WRAL since 1981.
