• Future educators commit to JCPS at signing ceremony (johnstoniannews.com) — Future teachers with ties to Smithfield are officially committing to Johnston County Public Schools after signing one-year contracts at a celebratory event in town. Eighteen educators, including Smithfield-Selma High School graduate and JOCO TEACH scholar Lilly Johnson, marked the start of their careers. The district hopes the program will strengthen its local teaching workforce for years to come. 
• Danger In The Skies: Laser Pointed At Life Flight Helicopter Near Johnston Airport (jocoreport.com subscription) — A Life Flight helicopter returning to Johnston County Regional Airport in Smithfield was hit by a green laser during a landing approach, the third such incident recently reported nearby. No one was hurt, but officials warn laser strikes can temporarily blind pilots and carry steep federal penalties. Deputies are still searching for whoever aimed the laser near Swift Creek and Strickland roads.
