📰 News we're reading

1. Southport earns water rescue device in 2026 'Save A life' raffle (wect.com) — Southport has received a new remote-controlled water rescue lifebuoy after residents helped the city win FPTower Inc.’s 2026 “Save A Life” raffle. The device will boost waterfront safety by letting first responders aid swimmers without entering the water themselves. City officials plan a special presentation at Waterfront Park later this month, with exact details still to come.

2. Small workforce housing project advances in Southport (portcitydaily.com) — A seven-unit workforce housing project in Southport has cleared its first permit hurdle, moving closer to providing more affordable options for local workers near E. 11th Street. Backed by Brunswick Partnership for Housing, the development targets residents earning 60% to 80% of area median income and will sit beside the nonprofit’s already full transitional housing complex, with final planning board review set for June 18.

3. Visible flare, natural gas odors possible during Southport utility work (wwaytv3.com) — If you live or work near East Moore Street in Southport, expect loud noises, visible flames, and natural gas odors from June 3–12 as Piedmont Natural Gas conducts routine maintenance. Crews will use a flare stack to safely burn off gas, which may create a tall, visible flame. Officials stress the work is planned, monitored, and poses no public danger, though weather could shift the schedule.

4. Jeff Register, 60 (portcitydaily.com) — Southport is mourning the loss of longtime resident and educator Jeff Register, a beloved carpentry teacher and golf coach at South Brunswick High School who passed away on May 26. Friends, former students, and neighbors are remembering his deep faith, love of family, and easy way of making everyone feel like a friend.
