📰 News we're reading

1. Wilmington police marking change to vehicle lights (starnewsonline.com subscription) — Wilmington residents will soon notice police vehicles switching from all-blue lights to a red-and-blue system designed to be more visible in all conditions. The department is also adding a low-frequency siren that drivers can feel, part of broader technology upgrades aimed at improving officer and public safety during emergencies, traffic stops, and roadside incidents around the city.

2. Wilmington townhome complex flooded after heavy rain (wwaytv3.com) — Residents at Harbor Station Townhomes in Wilmington were still dealing with significant flooding Monday after about six inches of rain, even resorting to kayaks to move around the complex. Tenants say this kind of flooding happens after many storms, and one resident reports water entering her apartment. The management company has not yet responded to questions about long-term fixes.

3. Fatal pedestrian crashes renew focus on Wilmington road safety (wwaytv3.com) — Two pedestrians were killed this Labor Day weekend on Market Street and South 17th Street, underscoring growing concerns about traffic dangers in Wilmington. Local officials point to aging infrastructure and rapid growth, and are advancing Vision Zero projects like new trails, bike lanes, and traffic-calming measures, with a detailed safety action plan headed to City Council by winter 2027.

4. Who gets the Engagement Ring if a couple breaks up before the wedding? (wwaytv3.com) — A Wilmington attorney explains that in North Carolina, the person who gave an engagement ring usually gets it back if the couple breaks up before marrying, regardless of who ended the relationship or why. Once a couple marries, the ring generally stays with the recipient, even in divorce. Locals considering engagement can use this guidance to avoid future disputes over jewelry.
