Around Hampstead, plenty of folks want more room to sit outside but get stuck deciding which kind of porch actually suits their house and the coastal weather. Three come up the most: covered porches, screened porches, and sunrooms. They can look alike in photos, but they solve pretty different problems, and it helps to know the difference before you start planning.
Start with the covered porch. It is roofed with open sides, so you get shade and a dry spot when it rains while the breeze still moves through. On the coast that airflow counts for a lot, since an open porch stays comfortable on a sticky afternoon in a way a closed room will not. The catch is that open sides mean bugs and blowing rain still reach you.
A screened porch keeps that same open feel and wraps screen panels around it. You hold onto the air and the light, but the mosquitoes and the yard debris stay out, which is the main reason people around here build them. Tensioned screen systems sit tighter and cleaner than the old staple-and-spline kind, and they take coastal wind better. If bugs are your real problem, this is usually the fix.
A sunroom is the bigger step. It is fully enclosed with glass walls and a solid roof, so it works as an actual room of the house no matter what the weather is doing. Cold morning, downpour, thick August humidity, you can still use it. It also adds finished square footage instead of a seasonal spot. The trade is that it is a larger build with more permitting involved, since you are putting up a conditioned room rather than an open structure.
A rough way to sort it out: if you mostly want shade and cover from the rain, a covered porch handles that. If the bugs are what keep you inside, screen it in. If you want a space that works in January as easily as July, you are looking at a sunroom.
Whichever way you lean, the coastal basics still apply. Salt air and humidity are tough on framing and fasteners, so the materials and hardware should be picked for this environment and not an inland one.
