Wilmington Planning Commission to vote on deaf charter school rezoning request (wect.com) — A proposed bilingual charter school for deaf and hearing students in Wilmington faces a key rezoning vote Oct. 7 before the Planning Commission, with a City Council hearing set for Nov. 3. After state officials denied an accelerated opening over budget and logistics concerns, organizers are revising plans while more than 300 interested families, many from New Hanover County, await the outcome.
   

2. Wilmington City Council to consider drainage project, lease, rezoning and venue funding (wect.com) — Wilmington City Council will vote Tuesday on a $1.1 million Pirate Cove drainage project to reduce neighborhood flooding, along with a new downtown lease and rezoning for a 12-acre mixed-use development. Council members will also consider nearly $194,000 for improvements at Live Oak Bank Pavilion and Hugh Morton Amphitheater, with the meeting set for 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.
   

3. Living Hope drops plans for Dock Street location after neighborhood concerns (wwaytv3.com) — Living Hope Day Center has dropped its plan to move into the former Sorrow Drowner Tiki Bar at 10th and Dock streets in Wilmington after nearby residents and school officials raised concerns at a recent City Council meeting. The nonprofit says community feedback revealed broader neighborhood issues it hadn't fully understood and will now pause to reassess locations while continuing its current services elsewhere.
   

4. Battleship North Carolina marks 65 years in Wilmington by preserving stories of those who served (wwaytv3.com) — Volunteers at the Battleship North Carolina in Wilmington are marking the ship's 65th year here by collecting stories, photos, and records of North Carolinians who served in World War II. If your family has a connection to the battleship or a fallen service member, staff are asking you to share documents and memories to help turn names on the memorial into detailed personal histories.
   

5. Meet the humanoid robot UNC Wilmington students are bringing to life (wect.com) — UNC Wilmington students are programming a new $60,000 humanoid robot on campus, giving local engineering and computer science majors rare hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology. Working on everything from balance to custom movements, they plan to showcase the robot at games and events while expanding its capabilities over the coming years.
