📰 News we're reading

1. Two WS/FCS students charged with posting threats online, assault rifle seized in new case (abc45.com) — Parents and students in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools are grappling with two recent safety scares: racially motivated online threats tied to a Reagan High student and a knife found in a Mount Tabor student's backpack. Deputies seized a rifle shown in social media posts, charges were filed in both cases, and families are now questioning how well security screenings and accountability are working across district campuses.

2. As Pell grants expand, students see openings to afford short-term job training (timesleader.com) — Forsyth Technical Community College in Winston-Salem is preparing to tap a new federal Workforce Pell program that could help local students afford short-term job training like nursing assistant courses. The expansion lets qualifying eight- to 14-week programs receive Pell funding, but schools must meet strict completion and job-placement benchmarks, so residents may see a gradual rollout as Forsyth Tech and other colleges seek federal approval.

3. Teen Who Recorded San Diego Mosque Attack Charged With Murder (newser.com) — In Winston-Salem, Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill says a 17-year-old North Carolina girl has been indicted on murder and conspiracy charges for allegedly helping facilitate a livestreamed attack on a San Diego mosque. Investigators allege she agreed to record and spread video of the shooting and share white-supremacist writings, while the gunmen killed three people and reportedly planned additional attacks on other targets.

4. DA says a teen who recorded San Diego mosque shooting livestream has been charged with murder (newser.com) — Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill announced in Winston-Salem that a 17-year-old local girl has been charged with murder by aiding and abetting in connection with a deadly shooting at a San Diego mosque. Prosecutors say she allegedly agreed to record and distribute a livestream of the attack and share the gunmen's writings, actions that under North Carolina law can carry the same penalties as committing the killings herself.
