1. Hot, dry summer impacts local lawns, crops across North Dakota (am1100theflag.com) — Fargo homeowners are feeling the strain of this hot, dry summer as lawns go dormant and vegetable gardens, especially tomatoes, ripen slowly. NDSU horticulturist Don Kinzler urges residents to water dormant lawns back to green before fall fertilizing and notes emerald ash borer has now been confirmed in Bismarck, expanding a serious tree threat already present in Cass County.

2. Fargo state Rep. Jim Kasper will attend special session remotely (northdakotamonitor.com) — Fargo residents' longtime state representative Jim Kasper will join next week's North Dakota special legislative session remotely while he continues stroke rehabilitation at a Fargo-area facility. He's regaining mobility but still relies on a wheelchair, and legislative leaders say his ability to attend the 2027 regular session in person will determine whether he can effectively continue representing his Fargo district.

3. Fargo-area Norwegians mourn King Harald V (inforum.com) — Fargo-area residents with Norwegian roots are mourning King Harald V, who died Friday at 89 after decades as a unifying figure for Norway and its diaspora. Locals recall his 1995 visit to Fargo and say his empathy after national tragedies and his attention to Upper Midwest ties made him feel like family, even across the ocean.

4. Hawks beat Red River 28-21 in season opener rematch (valleynewslive.com) — West Fargo-area football fans just saw the Horace Hawks edge Grand Forks Red River 28-21 in a tight season opener rematch. Playing at home in Horace, the Hawks jumped out early behind multiple touchdown passes from senior quarterback Matthew Dick and held on for the win, starting their new season with momentum against a tough Class AA opponent.
